Witzenberg Mayoral Chain Heist Raises Serious Questions

24 September 2022

The Witzenberg Municipality’s mayoral chain was lost or stolen a year ago, but for unknown reasons the matter was not reported to police until this week, people close to the case have informed the GOOD Party.

It is further alleged that the chain was last booked out without proper procedure being followed, and that the chain ended up in criminal hands in KwaZulu-Natal.

The municipality covered up the crime by purchasing a new chain. It is unclear whether the correct procurement processes were followed given the high value of such ceremonial trinkets.

These serious allegations raise questions about why the matter was not immediately reported to the police, and about the Council’s overall management of the issue.

The number assigned to the case by Ceres police yesterday was 225 / 9 / 2022.

GOOD has written to the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, asking him to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

Those in the know about criminality and/or negligence, regardless of their seniority in their party or government, must be flushed out and held accountable for their actions.
