With Covid knocking at SA’s door again it’s up to us to keep the door closed

STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD SECRETARY-GENERAL

Noting the announcement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize that Covid cases are back on the rise, and the deadly toll the pandemic continues to exact elsewhere in the global south, the only defence we have is our common sense to stick with the protocols and contribute to minimising its impact.

If we behave irresponsibly now we will inevitably soon be discussing the necessity for more disruptive measures to our lives and the economy.

Our government has not covered itself in glory in the quest to vaccinate our people. But in our highly politicised environment, with local elections around the corner, political parties must avoid the temptation to sew division and confusion.

We must continue to wash our hands, wear our masks and maintain the greatest measure of social distance that we can. Although it is now winter, we must keep windows open where we do have to gather, such as in taxis and at work.

If we all do these things scrupulously, now, we drastically reduce the virus’ opportunities to spread.

Ends…
