GOOD Speech by Rosa Louw,
GOOD George Municipality Councillor
23 June 2026
Note to Editor: This speech was delivered during the George Municipality Council Meeting
Speaker, where you live matters.
It matters because where you live often determines whether investment comes to your community, whether development is encouraged or delayed, and whether opportunities are created or remain out of reach.
That is the reality of spatial inequality.
And it is also why this item raises an important question.
Where is the plan for everyone else?
Where is the plan for Pacaltsdorp?
Where is the plan for Lawaaikamp?
Where is the plan for Borcherds?
Where is the plan for Blanco?
Speaker, for years the DA has sold residents the story of a city that works.
But a city that works is not a city with opportunities for some communities and promises for others.
A city that works is a city with a plan for every community.
This report speaks about reducing barriers, unlocking investment, encouraging development and creating economic opportunities.
Those are exactly the kinds of interventions that can help communities grow.
So what is the broader strategy?
What other areas are being considered?
What is the timeline?
And when can residents in other communities expect to see the same urgency in addressing the barriers that hold back growth and opportunity where they live?
Because if we are serious about tackling spatial inequality, then the conversation cannot end with one Overlay Zone.
It must be about a plan that ensures opportunity reaches every corner of George.
The people of Pacaltsdorp, Lawaaikamp, Borcherds and Blanco deserve to know: what is the plan for them?
Speaker, communities are tired of hearing about opportunity. They want to see it. And they want to see it where they live.
Where you live matters!
Thank you Speaker
