Western Cape’s “Parked” BMWs: Either An Act Of Corruption Or Incompetence

GOOD Statement by Peter de Villiers,
GOOD Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament

GOOD calls for an investigation into the 50 BMW that were purchased as part of the Western Cape’s law enforcement fleet but did not meet the required specifications.

It is shocking that Law Enforcement and Metro Officers are left incapacitated whilst 50 brand new BMW motor vehicles remain out of commissions, for over 6 months, because they did not meet the specifications.

In a statement, Western Cape Minister of Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie admitted the vehicles remain parked at the Gene Louw Traffic College for safe keeping.

The vehicles were procured towards the end of 2022 but once the vehicles were delivered, it was discovered that the fitment of technology that would make them fit-for-purpose would void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Fortunately, the DA government is not responsible for the procurement of train locomotives because they have replicated the kind of procurement errors or procurement corruption that led to South Africa buying train locomotives that were the wrong specification.

The DA does not govern better. They make the same errors, or are guilty of the same procurement corruption, as entities like PRASA who bought the wrong train locomotives – an error costing the country billions.

GOOD calls on the Premier to conduct a forensic investigation into the procurement of these vehicles that are not suitable for use.
In the meantime, children have died due to poor traffic management and enforcement, while vehicles intended to do traffic enforcement sit gathering dust.

If this was corruption then the forensic investigation will expose it and the Hawks must act. If this was incompetence then heads should roll.
