Statement by Brett Herron, GOOD Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and Secretary General.
We welcome the resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela from the Western Cape Provincial Cabinet.
29 April 2021
We have been calling on Madikizela to resign or face the chop for the past four weeks, since the Public Protector found him guilty of lying to parliament about DA government failures to deliver inner city affordable housing.
As we approach the 2021 Local Government Elections leaders and members of the DA are engaged in bitter battles for potential positions. Madikizela was ultimately forced to resign after leaked allegations that he lied about his qualifications proved to be true.
The Public Protector’s finding that he had lied to parliament should have been sufficient basis for removing him from office.
Premier Alan Winde should be more proactive about unethical and unlawful conduct in his cabinet. He should have the courage to act, instead of relying on the dirty work of underhand factionalists in his party.
