GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd,
GOOD George Councillor
01 January 2025
The GOOD Party in George condemns the disconnecting of electricity meters whilst the municipal offices are closed over the festive season.
Poor and elderly residents of George had to endure long queues, in a heatwave, to try and make arrangements after their electricity meters were disconnected, despite believing they had made payment arrangements with the municipality for their accounts that were in arrears.
Hundreds of residents, who believe they are indigent relief recipients have gathered outside Debtpack’s offices as the municipal offices are closed over the festive season.
George Municipality, like all municipalities, has an indigent support programme that helps needy people access basic municipal services.
In order to qualify, recipients need to meet certain criteria including a total household income not exceeding two times state pension (SASSA) per month.
In media reports the municipality has responded by saying it does not block electrical meters of registered, valid, indigent clients and a formal, signed agreement is required to settle arrears.
It is evident that indigent grant recipients are unaware they need to reapply annually to continue receiving the relief.
As a municipality, we are failing our residents if our policies are not clearly communicated to those in need.
As GOOD we will review the council’s current indigent relief policy and propose changes ahead of the 2025/26 budget.
