GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
6 April 2023
South Africans are increasingly looking for credible leadership options outside of the usual pool of old parties ahead of next year’s elections.
In this changing reality, the GOOD Party continues to work to provide an effective and reliable alternative in 2024.
Yesterday, GOOD contested its first by-election outside of the Western Cape as part of growing our national footprint. With 3,49% of the vote in Ward 105 in Bronkhorstspruit, Tshwane, GOOD moved up to the fourth biggest party in the ward.
This provides a platform on which GOOD can build to expand its footprint even further, across South Africa.
Since our establishment in February 2019, GOOD has continued to make encouraging progress as a new party, not only in the Western Cape, but in several municipalities across the country, including the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Gauteng.
Faced with a massive challenge in this by-election with no established support base in Bronkhorstspruit, our candidate Thabo ‘Charles’ Pheku managed to grow our support from the 0.28% obtained in the 2021 local government elections.
This is an encouraging outcome in one of Gauteng’s biggest wards which also proved to be a geographically challenging campaign.
As GOOD, we would like to thank our supporters and activists in Ward 105 for the hard work and dedication to the party. “Thank you to everyone who took the time to come out and cast their vote. We are humbled by your confidence in us. We will continue to grow and hold those in power accountable where necessary. This will form part of our ongoing work and commitment to the upliftment of my community, who I will continue to serve proudly,” said Pheku.
The result is also a clear sign of the fluidity of our politics in South Africa today, as voters are faced with increasing options, but also decreasing trust in what they can deliver in terms of real change.
As GOOD we remain committed to deliver on our promises to fight the ongoing injustices and inequalities in South Africa.
When South Africans head to the polls next year, GOOD will once again have proven to be a trustworthy and dependable voice for the all communities across the country, worthy of their vote.
