STELLENBOSCH MUNICIPALITY: URGENT INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES NEEDED TO ADDRESS STORM WATER ISSUES IN PNIEL COMMUNITY

The GOOD Party calls for infrastructure upgrades to address long-standing storm water issues in the Pniel Community, which have been causing significant damage to local properties. For years, residents have reported repeated property damage due to the flow of storm water, and as we approach Winter it is clear that urgent action is needed to prevent further destruction.

Homeowners in the area have confirmed that they have repeatedly raised their concerns with the Stellenbosch Local Municipality regarding two specific roads: a servitude road originating from Kloof Street and another road stemming from Middel Street. Both roads flow downhill, and the lack of a proper storm water management system has led to rainwater running directly into residential properties during storms, causing ongoing damage.

Local residents have voiced their frustration, explaining that the absence of effective drainage systems has caused long-term damage to their homes and has led to increased repair costs. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, and it is evident that immediate infrastructure upgrades are needed.

In particular, the installation of proper tar surfacing on both roads and the construction of storm water management systems to direct rainwater into dedicated drains and pipelines is essential.

In response to the residents’ concerns, GOOD has formally requested that Stellenbosch Municipality prioritise the necessary infrastructure upgrades for the two identified roads. This will help minimise the impact of storm water and protect the properties of homeowners from further damage. The GOOD Party remains committed to working collaboratively with the Stellenbosch Municipality and all relevant stakeholders to find sustainable, long-term solutions for road infrastructure upgrades that will not only improve road safety but also ensure the protection of homeowners and the community as a whole.

We stand with the Pniel residents in their calls for action. This is about ensuring safer communities and making sure that infrastructure keeps up with the needs of our residents.
