GOOD Statement by Grechard Petersen,
GOOD Stellenbosch Municipality Councillor
22 August 2025
The GOOD Party is calling for urgent municipal intervention following an oversight visit to the intersection of Kylemore and Helshoogte Road R310 provincial road, conducted by Councillors Marius van Stade and Grechard Petersen. This visit was prompted by numerous complaints from Kylemore residents and daily commuters who have raised serious concerns about the safety and functionality of this critical junction. Official inquiries were submitted to the Municipal Manager Geraldine Mettler and the MMC for Infrastructure Reginald Pheiffer, regarding this road safety matter which requires urgent attention.
The intersection has become increasingly hazardous, particularly during peak-hour traffic. Residents report severe congestion, prolonged commute times, and dangerous conditions for pedestrians attempting to cross. Of particular concern is the impact on emergency response times, as vehicles struggle to exit Kylemore efficiently.
The GOOD Party stands in solidarity with the Kylemore community and acknowledges the frustration and risk faced by road users. GOOD has formally requested that the municipality initiate a feasibility study to explore the installation of a traffic signal at this intersection. This intervention would aim to:
• Regulate traffic flow more effectively
• Improve pedestrian safety
• Reduce congestion during peak hours
• Support timely emergency response
We believe that a thorough investigation will yield practical insights and pave the way for a long-term solution that prioritises public safety and mobility. The GOOD Party remains committed to advocating for infrastructure improvements that reflect the needs of our communities.
We stand with the residents of Kylemore and will continue to advocate for safe road conditions and responsive governance.
