STELLENBOSCH MUNICIPALITY: GRAVES AT RISK AT JAMESTOWN CEMETERY

22 May 2025

GOOD Statement by Marius van Stade ,
GOOD Stellenbosch Municipality Councillor

22 May 2025

The GOOD Party has written to the Stellenbosch Municipal Manager to urgently address critical infrastructure upgrades at the Jamestown Cemetery. An oversight visit by GOOD, revealed serious stormwater drainage issues. Flooding caused by inadequate infrastructure is leading to water overflowing into the burial grounds, threatening the dignity of the site, the integrity of graves, and safe public access, particularly during the winter months.

It is especially concerning that the cemetery was only recently reopened after a lengthy closure. The current conditions undermine its ability to serve the community with the respect and stability it deserves. GOOD recommends that the Stellenbosch Municipality urgently commission an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to guide both immediate interventions and long-term solutions to prevent further stormwater damage.

While the upkeep of individual gravesites is the responsibility of families, we firmly believe the municipality must ensure that the surrounding infrastructure is properly maintained. Graveyards must be dignified, secure, and accessible spaces for families, mourners, and visitors throughout the year. Every resident deserves the peace of mind that their loved ones are laid to rest in a safe and respectful environment..

We therefore urge the Municipality to act swiftly and decisively, and we stand ready to collaborate on sustainable, community-driven solutions.
