GOOD Statement by Marius van Stade ,
GOOD Stellenbosch Municipality Councillor
26 November 2024
The GOOD Party has formally requested that the Municipal Manager of Stellenbosch Municipality investigate the recent closure of the Dorp Street Sunday Market.
Despite being in operation for 4 years, in full view of the municipality, the market organisers were asked to submit a formal application.
Which was denied by the Municipality stating, “the area is not designated for informal trading or market activities”.
A month ago, the Municipality said it “is actively collaborating with the market organisers to find a more suitable location within the Stellenbosch town area”.
However, no new location has been identified and the market has been forced to downscale and rely on private pop-up venues.
The market, which has become a cornerstone of the town’s post-COVID recovery, provided a platform for small businesses, local vendors, restaurants, crafters, and community members to showcase their products and connect with the broader public.
It is a vibrant community space that has played a vital role in supporting local entrepreneurs and businesses.
The GOOD Party acknowledges the hard work and dedication of these local entrepreneurs, whose efforts were instrumental in revitalising the local economy during a challenging time.
It has fostered a sense of connection, contributing to the social fabric of Stellenbosch and supporting local culture and identity.
In light of the market’s closure, the GOOD Party sought answers regarding the municipality’s decision and its potential impact on local economic activities.
The Party raised concerns about how this closure might undermine the growth of small businesses, limit opportunities for social interaction, and detract from the sense of community that has been so carefully cultivated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We urged the Municipal Manager to consider the broader implications of this closure on our local economy and community.
The GOOD Party remains committed to working with the municipality, local stakeholders, and residents to explore ways to address the challenges surrounding the market’s closure and to ensure that the needs of local businesses and the community are heard and respected.
