GOOD statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD: Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
21 July 2022
The GOOD party calls on all South Africans to continue defending and fighting for our common purpose of equality, unity, and respect towards all.
On May the 15th, a white student – identified as Theuns du Toit – broke into a black student’s residence and urinated on his books and laptop.
The expulsion of Du Toit by the University of Stellenbosh should serve as a marker for turning our backs on racism, hate and other forms of privilege that are used against others.
As a rainbow nation, we must stand united against racism, so our institutions are inclusive spaces. The Stellenbosch campus must be a safe and inspiring place for every single person, where students of colour can feel free to fully pursue their education and embrace the experience.
While the steps taken by the University is encouraging, this was not the first accusation of racism at the Stellenbosch campus. Following this incident, many students of colour came forward to describe racist discrimination at the hands of fellow students.
As GOOD, we call on the University of Stellenbosh to continue the work to make its campus a place where every South African can feel welcome, not just a selected few.
Too many incidents have been swept under the carpet without consequence in South Africa. If the University of Stellenbosch wants to be part of a united country, then it must address the history of racist incidents on its grounds. The 1994 generation fought tooth and nail to secure a non-racial future for us all.
