STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD MEMBER OF THE WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT & SECRETARY-GENERAL

SIU INVESTIGATION OF PROVINCIAL PPE PROCUREMENT: PREMIER MUST DISCLOSE DETAILS TO THE PUBLIC
The Premier has regular media briefings about Covid-19 in the Western Cape but he has avoided sharing the fact that several provincial departments, including his own Department of the Premier, are being investigated by the SIU for their PPE procurement.
I call on the Premier of the Western Cape to immediately disclose which Western Cape PPE contracts are being investigated and why?
That there has been Covid-related corruption in the Western Cape is not a big surprise.
The DA pretends to be squeaky clean in comparison to the corrupt ANC. In fact, it’s six of one and a half dozen of the other.
The ANC has more opportunity to be corrupt because it controls the vast majority of state budgets.
But we’ve seen a pattern of abuse in municipalities led by the DA in the Western Cape over the past 18 months, several of which we have asked the Public Protector to investigate, which indicate widespread manipulation of resources and policies for the party’s benefit.
It would be no surprise, further, if we were to find that companies who irregularly benefitted from Covid contracts in the Western Cape are funders of the ruling party in the province which controls the people’s resources.
