SALDANHA BAY LOCAL MUNICIPALITY: FARMERS ARE NOT THE LAW OR ABOVE THE LAW

5 December 2024

GOOD Statement by Ricardo Van Der Merwe ,
GOOD Saldanha Bay Local Municipality Councillor

05 December 2024

The GOOD party is shocked to learn of another alleged attack on a community member by a farmer in Vredenburg.

At the invitation of farm workers, a 64-year-old man went to visit them over the weekend, at their residence on the farm.

It is alleged that the farmer accused the man of trespassing and assaulted him with an iron pick.

After receiving treatment at the Vredenburg Hospital, he was transferred to a Cape Town hospital for an operation to repair the severe damage to his ribs, arm and hand.

A statement was made to the police at the Vredenburg Hospital but the police are yet to follow up with the farmer.

This is not an isolated incident, the accusations against farmers taking the law into their own hands and the police turning a blind eye is a tragic tale being told across South Africa.

Farmers do not have the right to take the law into their own hands and they should be held accountable by the law for their actions.
