GOOD Press Statement by Sarah Mabotsa,
GOOD City of Tshwane Councillor
26 September 2023
The GOOD Party welcomes the SIU probe into the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works.
It has been four months since over 20 people lost their lives in a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal.
And although the plant is not confirmed to be the source of the cholera outbreak it is central to providing clean drinking water to residents in Hammanskraal.
On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation order initiating an investigation into corruption and maladministration between January 2018 and 22 September 2023.
The Hammanskraal water problem has been plaguing the community for over a decade.
The R290-million tender, awarded to companies linked to controversial businessman Edwin Sodi, was meant to resolve the issue.
But to date, only 60% of phase one of the project has been completed.
It will cost a further R4-billion and 3 years to fix the current state of the treatment plant.
These are funds the City does not have. The residents of Hammanskraal will continue to drink unsafe water because they have no other option.
It is no secret that the City of Tshwane’s finances are in shambles and this investigation is a step in the right direction to recover wasted funds.
This Hammanskraal water crisis is a shameful stain on those leaders who had been tasked with leading the City, including the ANC as well as the DA-led coalition who have been in power for the last seven years.
