Resignation Of Johannesburg Mayor: Getting The City Back On Track

24 April 2023

GOOD Statement by Lloyd Phillips,
GOOD Councillor & Chair of Chairs in The City of Johannesburg

24 April 2023

The resignation of Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad is a step in the right direction to get the City back on track.

As exciting as the idea was of having a young Mayor, Amad did not have the skills and experience to lead what is arguably the most important city on the continent.

Johannesburg sits at the heart of South Africa’s economy and it requires a Mayor who understands the complexities of running a city that is fast becoming a metropolis.

It has a unique role to play in the country and needs to lead by showing stable, progressive leadership.

Unfortunately, this is not what residents got in this Mayor, and therefore the City must change direction and move forward with someone who is able to operate at the required level.

As Council – and leaders – we have the duty to work together to improve the dire state of Johannesburg, rebuild the crumbling systems and finally produce quality service delivery.

This has not been the case and it’s the residents of Johannesburg who are paying the price.

As GOOD we call for a Mayor who not only has what it takes to lead the City with all its complexities, but who will do so firmly rooted in stability and the best interest of our communities.
