Resignation Of GOOD Councillors In George

21 April 2023

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament

21 April 2023

The GOOD Party notes the resignation of three of its former George Municipality ward councilors who have joined the Democratic Alliance.

No party likes to lose any of its members, especially those who hold public office.

GOOD subscribes to a particular set of values and principles that are not shared by the DA. Among the most important of these values is that elected representatives are elected to represent the constituencies that elected them and not to become pawns in political power plays for positions.

We expect our public representatives to live our values, rather than merely learn to recite them for a salary.

If these councilors don’t subscribe to GOOD values then their deal with the DA is the right one for them and for us, and we wish them well.

Whether the resignations were part of a bigger “deal” involving jobs for pals in DA-led municipalities, as is being whispered, time will tell.

In the meantime, we must apologise to the communities they were elected to represent, who will feel deceived.

These maneuvers won’t distract us from our pursuit of economic, spatial, environmental and social justice for all South Africans, including for our people in George.

Nor will they arrest the steady decline at the polls of South Africa’s two dinosaur parties. Citizens are sick and tired of a two-horse race that has delivered little to no improvement to their daily lived experience.
