Residents Of Hanover Park Continue To Live In Fear Despite Big Spend On Technology

6 July 2023

GOOD Press Statement by Jonathan Cupido,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor

6 July 2023

R32-Million spent over 3 years, on “Soundthink” (previously known as “ShotSpotter”) has brought little comfort to the residents in Hanover Park, Cape Town.

On Tuesday night, 75-year-old Elizabeth Stevens and 60-year-old Carol Solomons lost their lives in a senseless shooting in Hanover Park. Three other victims were rushed to hospital.

GOOD extends our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery.

The City of Cape Town, through both the Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith have painted a picture that technology is bringing about peace in the gang-riddled area.

But this is purely a figment of Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’ imagination. What our residents face daily on the Cape Flats is not his dream but rather a reality of Hell.

Technology cannot be the only hope for the Residents of Hanover Park.
Social Upliftment plays a big role in bringing change within communities.

Hanover Park was born after the 1966 forced removals from the former District 6 area, Claremont, Wynberg, Sea Point amongst others.

GOOD calls on the City of Cape Town to come back to basics. To ensure that we address the Apartheid Spatial Planning and bring back a flourishing Social Development Department.

We need to foster a culture of a live, work, play society.
