GOOD Speech by Peter de Villiers
GOOD Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament

Note to editor: This is the statement that was prepared by GOOD Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament Peter de Villiers for today’s sitting.

Honourable Speaker, Honourable Premier, Honourable Members, the GOOD party would like to state categorically that the complaints lodged with the Public Protector’s office in this case were all but frivolous.

The Public Protector has the right and has often acted on the right not to investigate cases lodged with that office.

In this case, however, not only did the Public Protector see just cause in investigating these charges but went so far as to release two reports. One of which was a scathing report on the actions of Minister Bredell.

The report by the then Public Protector confirmed an abuse of the executive office for party political purposes.

The fact that the Public Protector’s office was subjected to extreme financial challenges at the time that the incumbent Public Protector took office as Acting Public Protector led to that office withdrawing from a number of cases under review and sadly this was one of those cases.

We as the GOOD party, however respect her decision to do so.

One look at the Minister and Premier’s reasoning for setting aside the Public Protector’s initial findings, reveals that this appeal was based on technicalities. And not on the core complaints lodged by Mr Herron.
