STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD SECRETARY GENERAL
23 July 2020
PRESIDENT ANNOUNCEMENT DEMONSTRATES THAT SCIENCE LEADS
We support the President‘s decision to put the safety of learners, teachers and school staff first. In listening to the recommendations of the WHO, the South African government is listening to the best scientists and medical experts in dealing with this health emergency.
GOOD reiterates it’s call for all decision makers to listen to the science and ignore those who advocate for some sort of “herd immunity”.
The measures to stop Covid-19 procurement corruption and confirmation of investigations and prosecutions already underway is encouraging.
Emergency funds must go to those who need them. Corrupt politicians and officials need to be prosecuted and put in prison and the stolen money returned to the people of South Africa.
The President’s Proclamation allowing the SIU to immediately investigate any suspected corruption in Covid19 spending is the right thing to do to proactively fight to stop waste and catch thieves.
The commitment to continuing school nutritions programmes through the school break is a welcome measure to mitigate the impacts of food insecure families.
