South Africans know from recent apartheid experience that maintaining peace and respect for the law is impossible if the law is unfair and unjust.This is a lesson that the people of Israel know well, too. There, one of the best equipped militaries and intelligence services in the world has failed for more than 50 years to create an environment in which the people can live in peace because of the unlawful and unjust policies with respect to Palestinian people.
The City of Cape Town’s policies on homeless people defy logic or humanity in a constitutional democracy that upholds the equal rights of all. Criminalising people who are among the most vulnerable and marginalized in society is unconscionable.
It speaks to a City Council which is not only at ease with radical inequality, but intent on keeping things that way.
A city fundamentally divided – whether between rich and poor, black and white, Christian and Muslim – is not a sustainable city. It should be the role of the Council to bridge divides, not expand them.
This is not the kind of city the overwhelming majority of Capetonians want to live in. It is not who we are.
The South African Police Service and City law enforcement officers should collectively hang their heads in shame for responding so brutally to enforce the City of Cape Town’s brutality.
