NO ELECTRICITY A DAILY REALITY FOR MILLIONS

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron ,
GOOD Secretary General

31 January 2025

The GOOD Party notes that Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 5pm on Friday. Although disappointing, it is not a huge surprise that the generation issues at Eskom are not fully resolved. As a nation, we have been down this road before.

We encourage Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopato to continue with transparent communication on Eskom’s recovery and to retain his focus on ending power cuts.

As South Africans frantically charge their batteries and solar lamps, we would like to take this opportunity to remind our citizens to spare a thought for those who remain less fortunate.

The millions of South Africans who sit in the dark because electricity, although accessible, remains unaffordable. They are forced to choose between food and power.

The households and structures that remain unconnected to the grid 30 years into our democracy. According to the Stats SA General Household Survey 2023 only 58,3% informal dwellings have access to electricity.

Government has failed the most vulnerable of society leaving them in the dark.

Electricity should not be a luxury for the elite.
