GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General
29 May 2025
Today, a new coalition has been formed to govern the Matzikama Municipality. The GOOD Party has voted to remove the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) from office. We will now serve in coalition with the African National Congress (ANC), the Patriotic Alliance (PA), and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
This follows a sitting of the Matzikama Council earlier today, which saw a vote of no confidence in Speaker Andreas Sindyamba and Executive Mayor Johan van der Hoven. The decision was based on sustained ineffective leadership, failure to address community concerns, ongoing non-compliance, and a lack of sound corporate governance.
GOOD supported the election of Johan Muller of the ANC as the new Speaker of Council and Monica Bottom (PA) as the new Executive Mayor, Xolani Tsetu (EFF) as the new Deputy Executive Mayor.
GOOD’s Christoffel van der Westhuizen will join the Mayoral Committee member as MMC of Community Services.
The previous administration failed to meet the real needs of Matzikama’s residents. It is time for change. GOOD has joined this coalition with the hope that it will bring a renewed focus on service delivery, ethical governance, and the upliftment of our communities.
We are committed to ensuring that local government works for the people – by delivering services and restoring dignity to every resident.
We call on all councillors and stakeholders to act in good faith and to work together to deliver the kind of governance the community deserves. This is an opportunity to put the people of Matzikama first.
