Minister Zweli Mkhize on special leave

STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD MEMBER OF WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT AND SECRETARY-GENERAL

8 JUNE 2021

GOOD WELCOMES DECISION BY THE PRESIDENT

We welcome the decision by the President to place the Minister of Health on special leave pending the investigations into the Digital Vibes communications contract and the corruption allegations.

This is a difficult time, in the middle of a pandemic and as we are about to get out mass vaccination programme rolling, for South Africa to have our Minister of Health out of office.

It is, however important for the President to demonstrate that serious allegations of corruption, corroborated by some prima facie evidence, must be investigated freely and fairly and without any interference.

Our country needs to see unequivocal and consistent responses to serious allegations of corruption and malfeasance from those in government.

We hope that these investigations will be concluded swiftly so that we can bring stability to the health ministry at this unprecedented time.
