GOOD Statement by Joy Davids,
GOOD Disabilities Representative
22 November 2024
The GOOD Party would like to commend Miss South Africa, Mia le Roux for her maturity, bravery and openness in sharing her health journey with South Africans.
le Roux withdrew from the 73rd Miss Universe pageant due to severe vertigo, a challenge faced by many people with hearing impairments.
As a public figure, le Roux is playing a significant role in raising awareness about the issues and challenges faced by those living with disabilities.
Her influence can have a profound impact on shaping perceptions, advocating for change, and promoting inclusion.
She has the potential to serve as a powerful role model for others facing similar challenges.
The hearing-impaired face daily struggles in South Africa.
Although strides have been made with the passing of the South African Sign Language Bill in 2019, which aims to provide better access to communication for Deaf people, South Africa has a long way to go in advocating for an inclusive nation.
We commend le Roux for putting her health first, which is extremely hard to do when under public scrutiny.
