GOOD statement by Shaun August, GOOD National Organiser and Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament
03 June 2022
The GOOD party calls for urgent intervention in the Western Cape amid an ongoing war against the children in our province who are fearing for their lives on a daily basis.
While the country marks National Child Protection Week, the Western Cape has been rocked by recent events in Parkwood which saw an angry mob beat and set alight a man who allegedly planned to abduct children in the area.
Reports on the matter are however conflicting, as some official statements cite Abongile Mafalala fron Dunoon, Cape Town, as an innocent victim.
Events such as these are rooted in the fear of terrified citizens and lead to communities stepping in where SAPS and law enforcement are failing.
People are rightfully concerned, with an ineffective provincial safety plan that is a blueprint – a test document to experiment with the lives of residents in the Western Cape and compiled by individuals far removed from these crime hotspots.
It should be accepted that the DA-led provincial government does not have solutions to crime.
What is gravely concerning is the spate of kidnappings that is happening and the frequency of these abductions. Our children are not safe at schools as there is insufficient security personnel and they are not safe in communities due to the lack of law enforcement visibility.
The Western Cape Government needs to mobilise all law enforcement agencies, and request the national intelligence services and provincial police intelligence to rise and protect these vulnerable kids who are forcefully taken from the safety of their loved ones and are either sold or brutally murdered, in broad daylight.
The President recently convened with leaders of opposition parties to discuss the current state of South Africa, specifically relating to national security, human trafficking, economic growth, security and kidnappings. Urgent intervention should be prioritised from all three spheres of government to put an end to these captures.
We need to act now, as a collective, to secure the future of our children – they depend on us.
