GOOD Statement by Jeremy Papier,
GOOD Swartland Municipality Councillor
22 March 2026
On this Human Rights Day, we pause to reflect on the hard-won freedoms that define our democracy and the responsibility we all share to protect and advance them. This day is not only a commemoration of our past struggles, but a call to action to ensure that the promise of dignity, equality, and justice is realised for every South African.
Human rights are not abstract ideals; they must be lived realities. Yet, for many citizens especially in the rural areas, these rights remain out of reach. High levels of unemployment, inequality, crime, and failing service delivery continue to undermine the basic rights enshrined in our Constitution. The right to safety, quality education, access to healthcare, and economic opportunity cannot exist only on paper.
From a political perspective, Human Rights Day reminds us that governance must always be people-centred, accountable, and transparent. Leaders must be held responsible for upholding the rule of law and ensuring that public resources are used to improve the lives of all, not the few. Do not forget the rural areas and informal settlements and farms. Corruption, inefficiency, and abuse of power are direct violations of human rights and must be confronted decisively.
We believe that true freedom is achieved when individuals are empowered to live with dignity, participate in the economy, and have confidence in public institutions. This requires bold reforms, ethical leadership, and active citizen engagement.
We honour those who fought for our freedom by recommitting ourselves to building a society where human rights are protected, promoted, and fulfilled for all.
Let us move from promise to progress.
