GOOD welcomes the rejection by Parliament of the NYDA Board
New process to start to select new candidates

29 January 2021

Yesterday, Parliament rejected the NYDA board and will restart the process of appointing a new board.

GOOD welcomes this news, as we have previously written to Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane appealing for true representation and qualified candidates for the board.

Whilst certain members demonstrated the inclusion of a range of skills with proven abilities, others were far too heavily biased and linked to politically connected individuals.

The bias towards political cadres seems to ignore the requirements for the board composition. Section 9(4) of the requirements related to setting up the board of the NYDA requires that “members must reflect the demographics and geographical spread of the Republic.”

NYDA simply cannot be used as an Agency for cadre deployment whilst South African youth experience the highest unemployed rates in our country.

We will carefully monitor the process being re-established by Parliament and trust those selected will be chosen based on representation and qualification.
