STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD MEMBER OF THE WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT AND SECRETARY-GENERAL
19 May 2021
We welcome the urgent interdict granted to the National Minister of Human Settlements to prevent the sale of a public property, comprising of a block of flats, in Sea Point owned by the SABC.
Just last month GOOD Leader, and Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Patricia de Lille, informed a committee of parliament that land owned by State Owned Enterprises must be included in the country’s land reform programme.
GOOD has consistently called for public land to be used for the public good and not to be sold off to the highest bidder.
Well-located properties like the Tafelberg School and the SABC flats in Sea Point offer meaningful opportunities for the development of affordable inner city housing. The opportunities should never be sold off without regard to their role in land reform and integrating apartheid cities.
We call on the Premier to release the Tafelberg School site for affordable inner city housing and to abandon any plans to continue litigating over the Western Cape High Court judgment.
Tafelberg and the SABC flats, together, provide a precinct level opportunity for development of affordable and social housing units.
