Statement by Brett Herron, GOOD Secretary-General and Mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town

We call on all South Africans to continue to be vigilant so that we can avoid a resurgence of infections and new restrictions.

We welcome the reduction of restrictions announced by President Ramaphosa.

The third wave has been brutal and protracted, driven largely by the delta variant of the Coronavirus, and it is with a great sense of relief that we are seeing the infections reduce in most parts of the country.

We call on all South Africans to remain vigilant and cautious so that we can enjoy a coming summer season without the need for new restrictions to contain a rampant fourth wave.

The virus is transmitted by our conduct and our movement.  As we approach summer let us remain committed to containing the spread of the virus so that those industries that rely on summer trade have a hope of trading without restrictions and recovering.  This will save jobs and save lives.

We encourage all South African adults to get vaccinated without delay and hesitancy.

The vaccine is our best chance of returning to some normality.

A safe and vaccinated population will enable businesses to trade without disruption and with predictability.

A vaccinated population will allow us to enjoy social, arts, and sports events.

Most importantly a vaccinated population will save lives.
