GOOD Statement by Suzette Little,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor & Caucus Chairperson
16 March 2023
GOOD welcomes the decision by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to place his Mayco member Malusi Booi on suspension with immediate effect.
This morning GOOD called for action to be taken after a search and seizure operation took place late on the 15th of March at City offices, which included the office of the MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Booi.
The raid was a welcome sign that real progress is being made against alleged ongoing fraud and corruption in the City’s housing department.
However, the investigation into these allegations at the Human Settlements Directorate has been ongoing for sometime, with alarms raised as far back as 2020.
Furthermore, serious concerns with regards to the workings of the department have been brought to attention of the Mayor, on several occasions and by several opposition parties, through Council questions and debates.
The Mayor should therefore provide clarity on what exactly the Commercial Crimes Unit is investigating, when he became aware that his Mayco Member may be implicated and who else may be involved.
It is highly unlikely for this level of corruption to have taken place with Cllr Booi at work alone. There have long been rumours that the housing corruption cases extend beyond just a few individuals.
If there is any evidence that these corrupt activities involved any other City or even provincial government officials, swift action must be taken and residents must be informed.
