GOOD Welcomes Resignation Of Criminally Accused Deputy Mayor In Oudtshoorn

GOOD Statement by Sonia Bentley,
GOOD Oudtshoorn Councillor

24 November 2022

The GOOD Party welcomes the resignation of the Deputy Mayor of Oudtshoorn who remained in his position despite being in police custody and awaiting trial on sex offences.

Earlier today GOOD submitted a motion of no confidence in Cllr Mlandeli Nyuka as it was inappropriate for him to retain the office of Deputy Mayor, given the serious charges he faces.

Cllr Nyuka was charged in early October with sexually assaulting an employee in his office and refused bail, yet he continued to receive his monthly salary while sitting in jail.

We were appalled by the lack of action from the DA-led coalition in Council which kept Cllr Nyuka, of the Suid-Kaap Saamstaan Party, in place to avoid losing power.

The position of Deputy Mayor is one of the most senior public representatives and residents deserve better than to be represented by someone who is charged with serious sexual, and gender based, violent crimes.

While we welcome the decision by Cllr Nyuka to step down, it’s unfortunate that he waited until GOOD submitted the motion, which would inevitably have succeeded, before doing the right thing.

The people of Oudtshoorn expect more from their leaders.
