GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
31 October 2023
The GOOD Party is pleased to welcome three new councillors to our team in the City of Cape Town.
Ms Raafiqah Ganger, Mr Shahiem Nelson and Mr, Siyabulela Mamkeli were appointed earlier this month to fill the three GOOD vacancies in Council.
As GOOD, we are confident their wealth of experience, as well as their commitment to service delivery and community development will continue to serve the best interests of the residents.
All three have already played an integral part in growing support for GOOD and expanding our footprint in their respective communities.
Van Nelson is a known community activist and dedicated GOOD member in Mitchell’s Plain. His passion for the upliftment of his community is unending and is evident in his work in various community organisations. He formed part of the GOOD team in both the previous national and local government elections and has fulfilled the positions of GOOD branch chairperson in his community.
Mamkeli is another dedicated public servant with extensive experience in the City and local government. He previously served as a City of Cape Town Councillor, as well as a member of the Mayoral Committee (Mayco Member) in Health and Human Settlements. He was one of the DA councillors who resigned from the DA and Council in 2018 and participated in the formation of GOOD.
Lastly, Ganger has been a GOOD activist since 2019 and has spent years dedicating her time and work to community development and youth upliftment programmes. Her experience in parliamentary research and media, as well as deep understanding of the challenges faced by communities, will no doubt add value to our work in the City Council.
GOOD follows an open application process to fill its pubic representative vacancies – inviting all of its members to apply – and then a rigorous selection process which includes two distinct phases: a shortlisting process followed by an interview and assessment phase.
GOOD is blessed with many suitable and qualified members who are ready to serve as public representatives.
The integrity of our selection process is important in order to ensure that the most suitable councillors are selected from amongst the vast pool of talent and skills.
GOOD remains steadfast in its pursuit of a fairer South Africa characterised by economic, spatial, environmental and social justice for all – including for all the people of Cape Town.
