GOOD welcomes today’s court order restoring a Constantia family to their property, after they were unlawfully removed from their home earlier this month in scenes reminiscent of the very dispossession this family has spent years seeking redress for.
This family did not seek confrontation. They sought restoration of a property forcibly taken from them under apartheid, which they have pursued through the proper channels of the land claims process, with the evidence and historical record to support their claim. Instead of being met with due process, they were thrown into the back of a police van and removed from their own home, forced to relive the very trauma this country’s restitution framework exists to redress.
Let this be said plainly, GOOD does not and will never condone the abuse of the law or the justice system, by any party. We regret that there are officials within our institutions who act on complaints without properly interrogating them first and when that failure lands on a family already carrying the weight of historical dispossession, the harm is compounded, not incidental.
Today the court has proven what we have always believed: that when the law is properly practised, it stands on the side of the disadvantaged.
Justice is not an abstraction, it is what happened in that courtroom today.
GOOD has committed its full and continued support to the family as they proceed through the land restitution process.
Restitution must happen, because justice must prevail. Not as a slogan, but as a lived outcome for families who have waited generations for it. We will not stop walking this path with them until it is fully realised.
