GOOD WELCOMES CAPE TOWN’S PROGRESS DOWN ENERGY – INDEPENDENCE ROAD

16 February 2022

GOOD statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD: Secretary-General & Member of Parliament

16 February 2022

The announcement of Cape Town’s first procurement process for independent producers of renewable energy powerfully vindicates former Mayor Patricia de Lille’s vision of a responsible and energy-independent modern city accountable for its greenhouse emissions and protected from the deprivations and predations of Eskom.

The GOOD Party commends Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis for seeing through a process unveiled in 2016 by de Lille, which began with her launching an intergovernmental dispute and court cases against the then-Minister of Energy.

Governments and leaders come and go, but the needs of the people don’t change until they have actually been addressed.

As a constructive opposition party, in Cape Town, GOOD will support all City initiatives that accord with its values of social, economic, spatial and environmental justice.

It was in this context that GOOD recently expressed support for what appeared to be the City’s renewed commitment to building affordable housing in the inner city. A multi-site affordable housing initiative launched by de Lille was vehemently opposed by members of the DA caucus and abandoned by the City after her resignation.
