GOOD Press Statement by Lawrence Troon
GOOD Councillor & MMC Safety & Security, Nelson Mandela Bay
30 September 2022
The GOOD party welcomes the arrests of several people in Nelson Mandela Bay including the tainted acting city manager, Noxolo Nqwazi and ANC regional secretary, Luyolo Nqakula.
The Hawks arrested Nqwazi, and her close ally Nqakula, along with a municipal official, three other former DA councilors and other business people in connection with fraud and money laundering.
These arrests vindicate GOOD’s recent decision to pull our support for the ANC-led coalition in the metro after political divisions and maladministration under their leadership furthered plagued an already struggling Bay.
Earlier this year, GOOD raised concern over Nqwazi and her unlawful appointment as the City Manager. The governing coalition later agreed to remove her from her position, with the initial support of the ANC.
However, after Nqwazi decided to approach the court to challenge her removal, Council decided to not oppose her application despite commitment from the ANC and then Mayor Eugene Johnson.
This proved that the ANC had no real intentions to clean up the metro and to provide the quality service delivery that the residents deserved.
As GOOD, we have been fighting to turn Nelson Mandela Bay around, and we committed to do so only in a coalition that is rooted in clean and good governance.
These recent developments prove that we have always had the best interests of residents at heart, especially when we decide on entering a coalition with other parties.
We refuse to support any unlawful attempts to cling to power and positions and we once again recommitted ourselves to continue our fight against any corruption and maladministration in NMB.
