GOOD REASSURED BY DECLINING CRIME RATE IN TSHWANE

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron ,
GOOD Secretary-General

05 June 2025

Although three months do not make a trend, the GOOD Party is cautiously optimistic that the latest Gauteng crime statistics for January to March 2025 reflect a strong and reassuring decline in reported crime across the City of Tshwane.

At the heart of these numbers is a deeper message that safer communities are possible when governments care, serve, and invest in people’s dignity.

Comparing the same period in 2024 and 2025, Tshwane recorded a significant 17.7 percentage point reduction in murders, from 226 to 186 cases. This is the most substantial drop in homicides among all Gauteng metros and far exceeds the provincial average decline of just over 10%.

Of the 17 major crime categories monitored, Tshwane has shown reductions in 15. These include:
• Murder: Down 17.7%
• Rape: Down 3.1%
• Robberies at non-residential premises: Down 28.7%
• Cash-in-transit heists: Halved, with only two incidents reported
• Truck hijackings: Down 30.6%
• Property-related crimes: Down 8.7%

GOOD is a partner in Tshwane’s multi-party coalition government, which assumed office in October 2024. Since then, the coalition has prioritised the restoration of law and order, the revitalisation of service delivery, and the broader improvement of quality of life for all residents. These encouraging statistics offer independent proof that our efforts are yielding real results.

The police play a vital role in maintaining law and order and deserve commendation for their tireless efforts. But creating truly safer communities takes more than policing alone. Real public safety is built on clean streets, working streetlights, well-maintained parks, responsive services, and a government that people can trust.

Tshwane is becoming a model for how a functional, service-driven coalition can deliver real progress. When leadership puts people first, communities thrive and safety follows.
