The GOOD Party notes the outcome of yesterday’s Council meeting, where the motion to rename P. W. Botha Boulevard was opposed by the DA and referred to administration.
Let us be clear: the motion fully provides for a lawful, inclusive, and transparent public participation process. In fact, the DA themselves submitted a counter proposal that mirrors exactly what our motion called for. Yet they chose to publicly spin their position as opposition, claiming the motion “bypassed process.” This is misleading and politically convenient.
It is now obvious: the DA supported the principles of the motion but did not want to publicly associate themselves with it. This political posturing, together with support from the FF+ and ACDP, has delayed justice and accountability for the victims and communities affected by PW Botha’s legacy.
PW Botha was a killer. He gave orders to kill black South Africans. His name has no place on our streets, and no coalition spin can change that moral truth.
The question remains: if the DA supported public participation in principle, when will this process start? The people of George deserve transparency and accountability, not political theatre. The GOOD Party will continue to fight until our streets reflect dignity, justice, and constitutional values — not the protection of apartheid-era symbols.
The GOOD Party now calls on the DA, the FF+, and the ACDP to come out publicly and denounce the apartheid-era name of PW Botha Boulevard, instead of hiding behind spin and delaying the process. The moral responsibility is theirs, and the public has a right to hear it.
