GOOD Statement by Jonathan Cupido,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor
3 December 2025
The GOOD Party is shocked and deeply saddened by the brutal killing of a nine-year-old boy in Mitchells Plain on Tuesday night. A 21-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were also killed, while a 51-year-old and a 36-year-old man were wounded in the same attack.
According to reports, the young victim was at home when unknown assailants opened fire on the occupants of the Rocklands residence
This tragedy is even more devastating given that South Africa is currently observing the 16 Days of Activism against violence towards women and children- a period meant to highlight our collective responsibility to end precisely this kind of brutality.
Crime should never be politicised, especially when the Cape Flats is bleeding and communities are crying out for meaningful action and cooperation.
We call on the South African Police Service to act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators, and on the justice system to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable.
No family should ever endure such pain, and no community should be forced to live under the constant threat of fear and violence.
It is long overdue for SAPS to work decisively and in full collaboration with the City and the Province to restore peace to the Cape Flats.
We also call on the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government to take the socio-economic conditions in our communities far more seriously. It is not enough to focus only on road upgrades or overdue redevelopment projects. We need impactful social development programmes that are visible on the ground, that speak directly to the needs of our youth, and that create real and measurable change in people’s lives.
Between June and September 2025, 49 people were killed in Mitchells Plain,15 more than in the previous quarter. This escalating violence cannot be allowed to continue.
