GOOD Only Allocated 2 Min To Debate Taxi Strike At Council Sitting

23 August 2023

GOOD Press Statement by Jonathan Cupido,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor

23 August 2023

Despite being the party that requested a special council sitting to debate the taxi strike, the GOOD party has only been allocated 2 minutes in council to discuss the issue.

The City of Cape Town Speaker Felicity Purchase denied GOOD’s request for an urgent and special council meeting but she did agree to allow the council to debate the issue for an hour on the 24th of August, during an Ordinary Council meeting.

The Taxi stayaway led to five deaths, property was damaged, food security was threatened and once again it was the poor and working-class who were left suffering.

GOOD does not condone the violent action that played out on the streets of the city but we need answers to what led us to this point.

Two minutes is not enough time to ventilate any of our concerns properly.

In contrast the Democratic Alliance has been given 35 minutes to defend their actions.

It is evident that the DA-led council is shielding their DA colleagues from criticism.

GOOD finds the allocation of time disrespectful to the residents of Cape Town.
