GOOD DRAKENSTEIN MOURNS THE TRAGIC LOSS OF FOUR LIVES IN BAKKA INFORMAL SETTLEMENT

11 October 2026

GOOD Statement by Johan van Schalkwyk,

GOOD Drakenstein Ward 4 Candidate & Councillor

11 October 2026

The GOOD Party in Drakenstein is devastated by the tragic loss of four lives in Bakka Informal Settlement in an incident allegedly linked to Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The deceased include a mother, her two children, and another young child staying overnight. Four lives were taken, families shattered, and a community left grieving. Behind every lost life is an unfinished story, unrealised dreams, and unbearable pain. No family or community should endure this.

The allegations surrounding the fire make this tragedy even more devastating. The woman’s former boyfriend allegedly threatened to kill her multiple times that day before using generator fuel to set her home alight. She reportedly held a protection order against him and had begged authorities not to release him from prison.

If confirmed, we must ask: what is the purpose of a protection order if a woman can raise the alarm, seek protection, and warn authorities, yet still lose her life? A protection order cannot be a filed document, a death threat cannot be treated as a routine complaint, and cries for help must be answered with urgent action.

We cannot bring this mother and three children back or undo the pain, but GOOD will demand answers, a thorough investigation, and full accountability. GOOD has consistently opposed GBVF nationally, proposing decisive policy interventions. South African women and children are suffering as protective systems fail them, and we will work tirelessly to eradicate this stain on our nation.

To the mourning families and the people of Bakka, we extend our deepest condolences and share in your grief. To every woman living in fear and seeking help: your life matters, your pleas must be taken seriously, and you deserve safety, dignity, and peace.

May their souls rest in peace, may their families find strength, and may this tragedy compel system leaders to confront any established failures.
