25 August 2023
The GOOD Party will be joining the Electricity Tariffs Must Fall protest on Saturday 26 August 2023.
Leader of the GOOD Party Patricia de Lille, Secretary-General Brett Herron, Cape Town Councillor responsible for Finance Anton Louw and members of the party will gather at the Cape Town Civic Centre at 10am.
The City of Cape Town’s leadership has been caught in a web of greed and lies.
The unlawful profiteering by the City, at a time of rampant unemployment and pervasive poverty in a severely constrained economy, should be condemned in the strongest terms.
GOOD will be defending the residents’ rights to affordable electricity.
GOOD takes issue with:
• Cape Town council approved a 17.6% electricity tariff hike from 1 July 2023, NERSA only approved 15.1%
• The City implemented a 9.6% tariff hike from 1 July 2022, NERSA only approved 7.47% – An unresolved formal dispute process is still ongoing
• The 17.6% increase was applied on the disputed 9.6% increase – resulting in residents paying an effective 19.7% tariff increase.
• The City is deducting municipal debt form prepaid electricity purchases – the amount depends on the value of the property but ranges between 30% – 90%
• Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is using taxpayers’ money to defend the city’s unlawful actions in court
It is time for the City of Cape Town to show leadership and assist hard-pressed consumers.
Capetonians simply cannot afford the increase, it is unfair, unaffordable and unjustified. Like the majority of South Africans, many Capetonians are struggling to make ends meet.
