Like the majority of South Africans, the majority of Sudan’s citizens are kind, warm, generous and peace-loving people.

GOOD is concerned by reports that Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok has been placed under house arrest after an unidentified military force besieged his house early on Monday.

President Hamdok is the first non-military leader of Sudan in more than 3 decades.

Former President Omar al-Bashir was the head of state from 1989 until 2019. Al-Bashir was the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), for allegedly directing a campaign of mass killing, rape, and pillage against civilians in Darfur.

Between 200,000 and 400,000 people lost their lives and 2,5 million Sudanese in the Darfur region were displaced during this civil war.

Bashir was also recently convicted of corruption.

The transition from military rule to a free and fair democracy, where corrupt leaders that foment hate, division and violence are removed, is something that the South African government must support.
