GOOD statement by Lloyd Philips,
GOOD: City of Johannesburg Councillor
5 September 2022
The GOOD party remains committed to cleaning up the City of Johannesburg. This can only happen when we hold those who abuse their positions to interfere with council matters accountable.
Last week, GOOD supported the motion of no confidence against Speaker, Vasco da Gama, because he has abused the position of Speaker to shield the government from Council and public scrutiny, and to undermine transparency.
As GOOD, we were among the first to raise the alarm with regards to the Speaker, earlier this year, amid concerns over the concealing of reports on fraud and corruption within the city. The Speaker also spent around R600,000.00 of taxpayers money on a council meeting that lasted one hour.
The Speaker was also actively suppressing democracies, especially the smaller parties, including GOOD, by not allowing us fair opportunities to speak in council.
Although this is a battle for those minority parties, who joined the so called ‘multi-party government’, to fight for themselves we observed how their powers and functions have been centralised, resulting in those parties being nothing more than voting cows.
Furthermore, we are concerned about the leadership of the City by Mayor Mpho Phalatse, who is also facing a motion of no confidence.
During her time at the helm of the City the Mayor has placed her focus on internal politics instead of serving the residents of Johannesburg.
The City of Johannesburg cannot afford to have leaders in place who are not committed to serving the needs of the residents in the metro.
GOOD will continue to only support those who want to run a clean, effective City and take the necessary steps to fight corruption working against this goal.
