GOOD press statement by Donavan Saptoe,
GOOD: Councillor George Municipality
06 April 2022
Ten days ago GOOD requested George Mayor, Leon Van Wyk, to present to council allegations that two senior staff members in the municipality had been irregularly appointed on the instruction of the Director for Community Services, Alan Paulse.
Municipal regulations require the Mayor to present allegations of misconduct to Council within seven days. But the Mayor summarily and unlawfully rejected the allegations, refusing to table them to Council.
Instead of reigning Paulse in, the Mayor’s attempted cover-up emboldened Paulse to send death threats to Councillor Saptoe and his wife, Roslyn, a respected chartered accountant with her own professional practice in George.
In a series of voice notes, containing foul and aggressive language, Paulse alludes to the availability of hitmen in the taxi industry who will commit “murders” and “kidnaps” for R80 000.
I have today written to the Acting Municipal Manager requesting her to table the allegations of this very serious conduct, threatening my life and the safety of my family and others, before Council.
I have also requested Council to consider a precautionary suspension since Paulse has demonstrated an intention to commit violence.
I have opened a criminal case with the George SAPS and I expect the police to conduct a speedy and decisive investigation.
I have submitted verified transcriptions of the voice notes to the Acting Municipal Manager.
South Africans have had more than enough of corruption, and GOOD will not be deterred from its work holding crooks to account in George.
