GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd,
GOOD George Municipality Councillor
18 August 2026
The DA-led Garden Route District Municipality must immediately stop its plans to sell 19 municipal properties, including 12 in the greater George area.
The people of the Garden Route did not give the DA a mandate to sell away their future.
This is not simply about property. It is about whether public assets will be protected and used for the benefit of the communities they belong to.
Osgat in Pacaltsdorp has rightly become a focal point of community concern, but this is bigger than one property. It is about the future of public land across the Garden Route.
The community is angry because they understand what is at stake. Osgat forms part of Pacaltsdorp’s heritage and represents potential for development, tourism, community use and economic opportunity. Once it is sold, that opportunity is lost to the public forever.
GOOD supports the community organisations, lobby groups and political parties already standing against the disposal of these public assets. This should not be about party politics. It should be about protecting what belongs to the people.
Public land must be used for public good.
GOOD calls on the DA-led Garden Route District Municipality and George Municipality to immediately enter into transparent intergovernmental discussions to find solutions that keep Osgat and other strategically important properties in public hands.
The Pacaltsdorp community must be properly consulted and brought into the process. They deserve transparency, a meaningful voice and a say in the future of an asset that forms part of their heritage.
GOOD will not stand by while public assets are disposed of to address short-term financial pressures.
The DA has a long history of putting political and financial convenience ahead of communities. We are seeing it again with the disposal of public land.
GOOD will stand with the people who refuse to let our heritage and public assets be sold off. Because when the DA sells public land, it is not selling its own property, it is selling away what belongs to all of us.
PUBLIC LAND FOR PUBLIC GOOD.
