The GOOD Party in Stellenbosch is deeply concerned about the ongoing conditions at MESCO Farm, a site that was originally established as a temporary relocation arrangement under state supervision. What was intended as an emergency and short-term solution has, over time, evolved into a prolonged situation that raises serious concerns about human dignity, public health, and the wellbeing of residents.
MESCO Farm currently accommodates approximately 60 people of various ages, including children and elderly residents. The site continues to face challenges relating to inadequate sanitation and ablution facilities, limited infrastructure, and the absence of meaningful recreational spaces for children and young people.
The lack of sufficient sanitation facilities presents a clear public health concern and undermines the basic dignity of residents. Equally troubling is the absence of safe recreational opportunities for children, whose social, emotional, and physical development depends on access to appropriate spaces for play and interaction.
GOOD acknowledges that emergency accommodation is often required in difficult circumstances. However, emergency accommodation cannot become a permanent condition without the necessary services, maintenance, and long-term planning required to ensure acceptable living standards.
We therefore call on the Stellenbosch Municipality, the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, and all relevant state authorities to:
- Conduct an urgent assessment of the conditions at MESCO Farm;
- Increase and improve sanitation and ablution facilities;
- Ensure regular maintenance, cleaning, and waste management services;
- Provide safe recreational opportunities for children and young people;
- Develop and communicate a clear long-term plan for sustainable housing solutions for affected residents.
The residents of MESCO Farm deserve more than temporary survival conditions. They deserve to live in an environment that respects their dignity, protects their health, and provides hope for a better future.
GOOD will continue to raise this matter with the relevant authorities and advocate for practical interventions that place the rights and wellbeing of residents at the centre of decision-making.
