GOOD Calls For Removal Of Jozi MMC Mbundu

GOOD press statement by Lloyd Philips, GOOD City of Johannesburg Councillor

03 June 2022

The GOOD party calls for the removal of the City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Economic Development, Councillor Nkululeko Mbundu, who stands accused of meddling with procurement processes relating to the refurbishment of Walter Sisulu Square and intimidating officials.

The matter is presently being investigated by the Office of the Public Protector.

It is alleged that the MMC intimidated and bullied staff members after concerns were raised and irregularities pointed out by the Joburg Property Company (JPC).

When he didn’t get his way he summarily suspended the then-Acting CFO and allegedly wanted to fire the Economic Development Department’s entire EXCO.

The DA-led coalition government in the City must take action. If it doesn’t, it signifies that its commitment to good and clean governance is as phoney as that of its big brother, the ANC.

The DA has a big mouth about the principle of politicians accused of malfeasance stepping aside. It must practise what it preaches. It must have the courage to call on its coalition partner Action SA to recall its MMC.

Action SA leader Herman Mashaba committed his party to rooting out corruption by having ethical leaders in place. He needs to clean up his house if this is not the case.

The allegations against Mbundu were not made by anonymous sources or disgruntled political enemies; they emanate from senior officials in his own department.

GOOD calls for his immediate removal from EXCO pending the outcome of the Public Protector’s process.
