GOOD Statement by Sonia Bentley,
GOOD Oudtshoorn Councillor

23 September 2023

The GOOD Party calls for an investigation into the serious allegations made by the South African Municipal Workers’ Union in Oudtshoorn.

On Friday, the Oudtshoorn council was sent into chaos when SAMWU members stormed the chamber to deliver a letter of memorandum.

Although GOOD does not agree with the manner in which the memorandum was delivered, and the ensuing pandemonium it caused, the allegations made in the document cannot be ignored.

The memorandum raised concerns about “clandestine operations” and “illegal appointments”.

It accuses the Mayor of appointing political Staff and Cadre deployments within the administration.

It claims senior managers were appointed without following due process and flouting labour laws.

The letter of memorandum also raises concerns about the lack of compliance, with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, at municipal buildings.

If these allegations are true, it is a serious breach of the members’ code of ethics and a dereliction of duty.

The municipality has been given seven days to respond to SAMWU, GOOD calls on the leadership to use this time wisely and properly ventilate the issues.
