GOOD CALLS FOR IN-PERSON COUNCIL DEBATE AS PW BOTHA BOULEVARD NAME CHANGE HEADS TO COUNCIL

17 March 2026

GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd,

GOOD George Municipality Councillor

17 March 2026

On 26 March 2026, George Council will have to confront an important question: whether a major road in our town should continue to carry the name of an apartheid-era leader. This debate must take place openly in the Council Chambers, not behind computer screens in a virtual meeting.

The motion to rename PW Botha Boulevard will be formally presented to Council at the ordinary council meeting scheduled for 26 March 2026.

This matter has generated significant public interest and speaks directly to how our community reflects on its history while building a democratic and inclusive future.

Apartheid was declared a crime against humanity, and it is therefore fair for communities to question whether the names of those who led that system should continue to define our public spaces.

Given the importance of this matter, GOOD calls on the Speaker of Council to ensure that the 26 March ordinary council meeting is convened in the Council Chambers instead of a virtual MS Teams meeting.

A discussion of this significance deserves open, transparent, and accountable debate, where councillors can engage directly with one another and where the public can follow proceedings in a meaningful way.

The people of George deserve to see their elected representatives debate this matter openly. GOOD therefore urges the Speaker to ensure that this important discussion takes place in the Council Chambers, where democratic debates belong.
